Baldwin-City
is located in Douglas County in northeast Kansas, about 12 miles south of Lawrence. As of the 2000 census, the population was 3,400 residents. Baldwin City is home to Baker University, the oldest four-year university in the state. Baldwin City has the distinction of being the only town in the United States with its name. Originally built as a stop on the Santa Fe Trail, the town was first named Palmyra. In 1858, a group of Methodist ministers founded Baker University. An early benefactor of the town, John Baldwin, built a saw mill at the location of present day Fifth and Indiana Streets. The city eventually changed its name in his honor. Baldwin City is near Clinton Lake and Clinton State Park, which offers fishing, boating, camping, hiking and wildlife viewing. Baldwin City is also home to The Midland Railway, which operates excursion trains on a line originally constructed in 1867. Trains take visitors on a 20-mile round trip ride from Baldwin City to Ottawa Junction, traveling through scenic farmland and woods. Each year since 1957, Baldwin City has been host to the Maple Leaf Festival during the third full weekend in October. It is the largest family event in the region and features a parade, arts and crafts fair, quilt show, history tours, train rides, live music and theatrical performances.

Northeast Kansas has a climate that is classified as humid continental, with hot, somewhat humid summers and cold, fairly dry winters. Typically the first fall freeze occurs between the last week of September and the end of October, and the last spring freeze occurs between the first week of April and early May. Northeast Kansas receives approximately 36 inches of precipitation during an average year with the most received in May and June. Thunderstorms can be severe, producing lightening, large hail and sometimes tornadoes. Snowfall is generally light, due to the dry, sunny weather patterns that dominate Kansas winters. Snow depth of at least an inch occurs an average of 26 days per year.
