Elkhart is located in Morton County in the southwest corner of the state of Kansas. As of the 2000 census, the population was 2,233 residents. It is the county seat of Morton County. Elkhart is a small, friendly town with lots of small town charm, located just a short drive to numerous larger cities, including Dodge City, Garden City and Amarillo, Texas. The town is home to five city parks. Cunningham Park is located at the northwestern end of Morton Street.This park is geared towards pre-teen and teen users with tennis courts, and a basketball court. City Liberty Park is located on Kansas Avenue next to the library and is geared towards younger children and includes a playground. Coronado Park and Swimming Pool Park are multi-purpose parks with playground equipment and picnicking areas. Whistle Stop Park is one of the largest parks in Elkhart and has lovely winding pathways for strolling and hiking. Elkhart is near Point of Rocks, one of many stops along the surrounding grasslands that offers a beautiful view of area. Tours can be arranged or those who are more adventurous can head out on their own. Self-tour booklets and other information can be obtained at the local office on Highway 56 in Elkhart.

The Southwest corner of Kansas has a semiarid climate. Summers are hot, often very hot, and winters are cool to mild. The western region receives an average of only about 16 inches of precipitation per year. Chinook winds in the winter can warm western Kansas all the way into the 80 degree F. range. Snowfall in southern Kansas averages five inches. Frost-free days average more than 200 in the southwest, making Kansas one of the sunniest states in the country. The state is also vulnerable to strong thunderstorms, especially in the spring. Kansas is also vulnerable to tornadoes and averages over 50 statewide annually. Although summers are hot, summer nights are usually cool in the west.
