Emporia
is located in Lyon County in east-central Kansas. It is situated between Topeka and Wichita at the intersection of U.S. Route 50 with Interstates 335 and 35 on the Kansas Turnpike. As of the 2000 census, the population was 26,760 residents. The Neosho River flows along the northern side of the city and the Cottonwood River, one of its tributaries, flows along the citys southern edge. The two rivers meet near the eastern boundary of Emporia and flow southeast to join the Arkansas River in Oklahoma. The city also has two large city parks; Peter Pan and Sodens Grove, although there are 18 city parks in all consisting of over 250 acres. These recreational areas offer tennis, fishing ponds, nature trails, picnicking, an amphitheater, disc golf, basketball and playground equipment. Emporias Recreational Center also has an indoor swimming pool, a game room with billiard tables, air hockey, basketball and volleyball courts and other games. Emporia also has 13 structures listed on the National Register of Historic Places, including the Granada Theater, the Anderson Carnegie Memorial Library, the Sodens Grove Bridge and the Keebler Stone House. For golfers, Emporia has an 18-hold public golf course located just a few miles south of town.

East-central Kansas has a humid sub-tropical climate. Over the course of a year, temperatures range from an average low of 15 degrees F. in January to an average high of nearly 93 degrees F. in July. The temperature falls below the freezing point an average of 188 days per year. Typically the first fall freeze occurs between the last week of September and the end of October, and the last spring freeze occurs between the first week of April and early May. The area receives 35 inches of precipitation per year, with the most in May and June. Snow depth of at least one inch occurs an average of 20 days per year. Severe weather is possible, in the form of thunderstorms and tornadoes. Thunderstorms may produce large hail and lightening.
