Garden-City is small city located in Finney County in southwest Kansas. As of the 2000 census, the population of Garden City was 28,451 residents. It is the county seat and also the home of the campus of Garden City Community College. The largest zoological facility in western Kansas, Lee Richardson Zoo, in also located in the community. Garden City gained notoriety when it was depicted in Truman Capotes novel, In Cold Blood, and as the county seat, it was the location of the trails of the murderers. The community of Garden City boasts more than sixty restaurants and forty churches, which both cater to a diverse local population. The Lee Richardson Zoo is the most well-known attraction in Garden City. Walking tours are free to the public and the fee for a driving tour is three dollars. The Lee Richardson Zoo contains the largest hand-dug swimming pool in the world. It is also an AZA accredited zoo and has more than 100 species of animals located on 47 acres inside Finnup Park. The zoo include many animals that are non-native to southwest Kansas. The newest exhibit is Wild Asia and includes Red Pandas, Bactrian Camels, Snow Leopards, Snow Monkeys and a Sun Bear. Hours at the zoo are April-October 8:00 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., November-March 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. It is closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years Day.

Garden City Weather & Climate

Southwest Kansas has a humid subtropical climate with hot, humid summers and cold, dry winters. Temperatures range from an average of of about 20 degrees in January to an average high of 93 degrees in July. The first fall freeze typically occurs between the second week of October and mid-November, and the last spring freeze occurs between the end of March and the final week of April. The area receives over 30 inches of precipitation in an average year, with the most occurring in May and June. Winter snowfall averages almost 17 inches. The area is vulnerable to severe weather, with frequent thunderstorms in spring and summer. These thunderstorms may produce large hail and tornadoes.
