Hiawatha is a small town located in Brown County, Kansas. Its the county seat and largest city in Brown County with a population of approximately 3,200 residents. The town of Hiawatha sits among the rolling hills of northeast Kansas, situated between the city of Kickapoo and the Sac & Fox Indian Reservations. It is named after the poem by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow called The Song of Hiawatha. The town is also nicknamed the City of Beautiful Maples due to the countless maple trees that line the streets and produce magnificent colors in the fall. Hiawatha is also known for having the oldest Halloween parade in the U.S., starting in 1914. The main street, Oregon Street, runs east-west and was named for the Oregon Trail. East-west streets north of Oregon are named for Indian tribes that lived north of the Oregon Trail and streets south for tribes south of the trail. On the courthouse square, the ornate Old Town Clock has stood beside Oregon Street since 1891. The town also has many beautiful older homes and a lovely park at the city lake, located just south of town. The lake is surrounded by maple trees and is home to many geese and other wildlife. On the south side of the lake is a playground and on the north side is a sand volleyball court and more playground equipment. Hiawatha is also home to the Davis Memorial, completed in 1934 by John Milburn Davis in honor of his wife, Sarah. The memorial is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
