Norton is a small town located in northwestern Kansas on the border. As of the 2000 census, the population was 3,012 residents. Norton is the hometown of the late Keith Sebelius, a member of the United States House of Representatives from Kansas from 1969 through 1981. Keith Sebelius daughter-in-law, Kathleen Sebelius, is the incumbent Governor of Kansas. Norton is situated on Prairie Dog Creek and has been along the major transportation routes since its early days. Highways 36, 283 and 383 serve the area, as well as a railroad operating on tracks that were once part of Rock Island. This pretty town has a busy downtown district, along with several attractions. Station 15 is a replica of an early stagecoach station, equipped with period furnishings. It sits in a roadside park beside Highway 36. The Keith Sebelius Reservoir is three miles southwest of Norton. It covers approximately 2200 acres and Prairie Dog State Park is located on the north side of the lake. The park is filled with a variety of wildlife and vegetation and includes a 19th century adobe house and 1886 Hillmon School. The Norton Wildlife Area covers 6,500 acres and offers a variety of recreation around the lake, including swimming, boating and camping.

Norton Weather & Climate

Northwest Kansas has a semiarid steppe climate. Summers are hot, often very hot, and winters are generally cold. Also, the western region is semiarid, receiving an average of only about 16 inches of rain per year. Chinook winds in the winter can warm western Kansas in the wintertime. Kansas is as sunny as parts of Arizona, but in spite of the frequent sunshine, the state is also vulnerable to strong thunderstorms, especially in the spring. Many of these storms become Supercell thunderstorms, which can spawn tornadoes, often of F3 strength or higher. Kansas has reported more tornadoes (for the period 1 January 1950 through to 31 October 2006) than any state except for Texas. Kansas averages 50 tornadoes annually.
