Quinter is a small city located in Gove County in northwestern Kansas. The population as of the 2000 census was 961 residents. Called the "Half-Mile High City," Quinter gained national publicity in November 2006 when longtime resident Waldo McBurney, age 104, was proclaimed the oldest worker in the United States. Castle Rock is located 15 miles south and 4 miles east of Quinter in the Smoky Hills Region. Castle Rock is a large limestones pillar that reaches nearly 70 feet tall. The chalk was deposited in the area by an ancient inland sea. The formation was formed by the weathering of the chalk by wind and water. It received its name because it is said to look like a castle rising above the prairie. Castle Rock may only last a few more years due to weathering and people climbing on the rocks. The tallest spire fell following a thunderstorm in 2001. The entire Smokey Hills region contains many interesting rock formations and bluffs. The region is divided into three areas based on the underlying rock outcroppings: The Dakota Formation Sandstone, the Greenhorn Limestone and the Niobrara Chalk. On January 29, 2008, Castle Rock and Monument Rocks were jointly named as one of the 8 Wonders of Kansas.

Quinter Weather & Climate

Western Kansas  is classified as having a semiarid steppe climate. Summers are hot and winters are cold. The western region receives an average of only about 16 inches of rain per year. Chinook winds in the winter warm western Kansas in the wintertime. As a result, Kansas is as sunny as parts of Arizona and California. However, in spite of the frequent sunshine, the state is also vulnerable to strong thunderstorms, especially in the spring. Many of these storms become Supercell thunderstorms, which can spawn tornadoes, often of F3 strength or higher. Kansas has reported more tornadoes (for the period 1 January 1950 through to 31 October 2006) than any state except for Texas. Kansas averages 50 tornadoes annually.
