Sylvan-Grove is a tiny town located in Lincoln County in north-central Kansas. As of the 2000 census, the population was 324 residents. Although small, Sylvan Grove offers visitors unique attractions. It is located in the heart of Stone Post County, which is famous for its limestone quarries. The rock is still quarried today north of Sylvan Grove. One the areas most recognized landmarks is a double-arched stone bridge, located nine miles north of Sylvan Grove on Highway K-181. It was a meeting place for three different ethnic groups in the settling days of this area. Over two-thirds of the businesses on Sylvan Groves main street are housed in limestone buildings. Wilson Lake, which is located on the Saline River, is just ten minutes west of Sylvan Grove. Offerring 9,000 acres of water and 100 miles os shoreline, Wilson Lake is one of the most popular in the state of Kansas. Activities at the lake include fishing, boating, swimming, camping, volleyball courts and picnicking. Wilson Lake is known for its abundance of fish varieties. The Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks stock the lake with millions of fish, including walleye, white bass, small mouth bass and striped bass.

Sylvan Grove Weather & Climate

Central Kansas has a humid continental climate. Over the course of a year, temperatures range from an average low of 15 degrees F. in January to an average high of nearly 93 degrees F. in July. The temperature falls below the freezing point an average of 188 days per year. Typically the first fall freeze occurs between the last week of September and the end of October, and the last spring freeze occurs between the first week of April and early May. The area receives 35 inches of precipitation per year, with the most in May and June. Snow depth of at least one inch occurs an average of 20 days per year. Severe weather is possible, in the form of thunderstorms and tornadoes. Thunderstorms may produce large hail and lightening.
